First off, what is IAESTE?
You may be thinking “ICE-TEA? What is this?” which is perfectly understandable, we’ve all been there are one point or another. IAESTE stands for
the International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience
a bit of a mouthful I think we can all agree.
What do we do?
Simply put, we help students get work experience placements in foreign countries. We find jobs in Glasgow, the other 84 member countries find work in their cities, and we meet and swap. So when we send a Scottish student to Vietnam for a one-of-a-kind experience, a Vietnamese students comes to Glasgow for his or her summer of a lifetime. As a member you have the opportunity to make this happen, and to be that student gaining valuable work experience in a different part of the world! Some of our most important jobs include
- Helping UK students with their applications (CV, cover letter etc.)
- Promoting the IAESTE program through talks, attending career fairs and other work with the British Council
- Arranging events throughout the year for the LC and the trainees – sub crawls, parties, meetings, socials, pub quizzes, bubble football, game nights etc.
- Attending international conferences to learn and share experiences with other IAESTE members from all over the world
In addition, we go “twinning” (visiting an LC in another country) every year. This year a group of us spent a long weekend in Wroclaw, Poland, and had a great time! You can read about it here.
Why should you get involved?
First of all, being part of IAESTE gives you the opportunity to experience and take part in all of the above. You will meet people from all over the world and learn about cultures completely different from your own. You can be part of our amazing Summer Reception, which will take you all over Scotland and is guaranteed to be a good time! In addition, being part of the LC and having responsibilities looks excellent on your CV, as well as increases your chances of landing an IAESTE placement (which looks even better on your CV). There are so many good reasons to join, and practically no reasons not to, so keep reading to figure out how to become involved!
How can you get involved?
The best (and the most fun) way to get involved with IAESTE is to join your local committee (or LC). If you live in or around the Glasgow area then you can join us! Not only is joining the IAESTE Glasgow LC a great way to get introduced to IAESTE and help yourself get a placement, it’s also loads of fun.
We have regular socials, parties and events throughout the year. During the summer when Scottish students go out to experience the world we get a whole load of students from far flung places coming for their very own international experience here in Glasgow! This is a fantastic time to be involved in the LC as we spend virtually every weekend going on trips and excursions everywhere. Highlights from the summer of 2014 include the four day trip to Skye and the whisky tasting tour, both of which were a great success!
Getting involved with our local committee is easy! We have meetings on Tuesday every two weeks in the city centre, and anyone is welcome to come along and join the social after. There are no joining fees, no contracts and no prerequisites. Please like our Facebook page to stay updated about events and news, and check out the Events Calendar here on our website.

We look forward to seeing you!
